Crafting My Entrepreneur Diary - From Dream Job to Dream Life

I had a dream job.

Between 2019 and 2022, I was the Vice President of Private Clients at Farfetch for the APAC markets. By 2022, I had built a Private Client team across APAC from less than ten people to over fifty. These people are very close to my heart. I was one of the most senior leaders in APAC, and I had gained respect and authority from the internal team and external business partners alike. I had the opportunity to travel all over the world. I had a very generous salary package. My outfits are well taken care of with the clothing allowance, so I could always dress in the most seasonal products.

I left my high-profile job in March 2022 - it was a tough and scary decision.

I lost my "stable" income and access to significant company shares. I was no longer invited to glamorous events or sent expensive festive gifts by vendors and brands. I had to pay for travel from then on. For a period of time, I struggled to define my identity - it had been associated with a renowned brand for the last twenty years. As my seniority had grown, I had been the Head, the Director or the Vice President of the brands I worked for - and that had somehow become associated with who I saw myself as a person.

But who am I really?

·   My belief in the power of genuine human interactions and authentic relationships was shaped during the challenging experiences we faced as new immigrants in Hong Kong when I was twelve. These experiences have been a cornerstone of my personal life and leadership style, and I want to champion them!

·   I crave learning and growth. When I was twelve, I taught myself five years' worth of English in two months to be accepted into my primary school. It was a big realization for me—that we can learn anything and be anyone as long as we want it enough.

·   Building something from scratch excites me, yet maintaining it is less exciting. I built the first Private Client team when I was twenty-five for DFS Macau Four Seasons Galleria, and I continued to build three more functions from scratch along the corporate journey. I am passionate about helping more businesses build a sustainable customer loyalty model.

·   I enjoy being a global citizen and bridging cultural differences. My roles in corporate have always been about translating global visions with local realities and connecting people - and being an entrepreneur empowers that even more.

I left a dream job to pursue my dream life 💃 . And I have no regrets.
